The construction works for the operation of the new municipal slaughterhouse in Ferres are in progress. The abattoir is constituted by two slaughter lines: one for cattle and one for pigs and sheep.
The projected annual capacity of the slaughterhouse will be:
- Pigs: 6400 heads/year
- Cattle: 3462 heads/year
- Sheep and goats: 36733 heads/year
The daily capacity of the slaughterhouse is 22.85 tons of meat. The site area for the slaughterhouse is 29.99 acres.
The slaughterhouse consists of the following sections:
- CATTLE SLAUGHTER LINE
- PIG –SHEEP & GOATS SLAUGHTER LINE
- COOLING ROOMS
- CORRIDOR & DISPATCH RAMP
- BY-PRODUCTS PROCESSING AREA
- AUXILIARY AREAS
The slaughterhouse building includes:
- Holding pens for live animals, with sufficient capacity to accommodate the daily capacity of the slaughter lines.
- Production areas with slaughter lines and processing sections for by-products.
- Cooling Rooms for carcasses and products for sanitary inspection.
- Veterinary and staff offices.
- Staff facilities including changing rooms, laundry, and sanitary areas.
- Mechanical room.
Within the slaughterhouse and in a separate area from the slaughter line, a by-product area has been designed consisting of a space for collecting and cleaning feet, a space for collecting and cleaning white offal, and a refrigerating by-product room.
Into the abattoir will be slaughtered: Cattle, Pigs, and Sheep & Goats. The site area will be divided into two (2) distinct zones:
- The clean area
- The dirty area
The operation of the proposed project is considered of great importance for the needs of the southern Evros region. The livestock sector in the area is considered one of the most significant in Thrace. With the focus on the Ferres area, animal husbandry presents a significant employment rate in the primary sector. Therefore, the wider Ferres area is suitable for the location of the slaughterhouse due to the geographical, geomorphological, transportation, and economic characteristics of the region.
